What an eye opener!
I'm very aware of portion sizes in my eating, esp. when I have access to the nutrition label of a food. ("100 calories? How big is the serving...) and am aware that a can of soup is ALWAYS 2 servings.
Even so, even though I ate an ENTIRE can of Chef Boyardee Beef Ravioli, (my traditional sick food), it did not have as many calories as the 32oz of orange juice.
The Chef cost me 340 calories, the OJ cost me
446
, over 100 calories more. And while I usually avoid the Chef because of the insane sodium, the carby pasta is always a concern as well. Well, I needn't have worried because it's 66 grams of carbs was blown out of the freaking water by the 103.17 grams in the OJ. I mean, I *knew* juice was nothing but sugar, but
jeez!
I'm switching to the little fizzy vitamin C packets. Wastin' all my calories on stoopid juice...

Sick? SICK?! EFFING SICK?!?! So it looks like I'm off training for about a week. And being full of germs rarely inspires me to get up and spend 10 minutes chopping and fixing food. At least I can keep my nutrition up. My throat is so swollen that I cant eat a lot of solids anyway. Lean Body, here I come!

I've always liked eating with chopsticks, and find that most simple, traditional pan-asian cuisine suits my diet very well as long as I mind the rice intake. Of late I simply take whatever meats or fishes I feel and marinate them in light sauces, garlic, lemon juice, whatever strikes my fancy, kept in individual plastic bags labeled by flavor. Stick them on a skewer and 10 minutes on my countertop hibachi ($30 at H Mart) nets me cost effective yakitori (or kababs as you will) in varieties limited only by my imagination. Sometimes I eat them over steamed veggies, in a salad, wrapped in low-carb flat bread with lots of greens, with seaweed salads...you name it. I rarely break 400 calories per meal and its almost all protein, simple carbs. There's portion control but what I love best is the chopsticks.
They make me eat more slowly, it's really hard to gobble when you can only pick up 1-2 small pieces of food at a time. I take the time to appreciate, to taste my food more than if I'm shoveling it into my mouth. With low-fat/sugar/sodium sauces and seasonings, each bite can be different, and because I'm taking my time I can taste every mouthful. I don't know that I can eat this way all the time as I *do* get bored and love my carb splurges, but I think I may have found my general *default* diet. :-)
I went to Benihana for a friend's birthday Sunday and you can see the ratio of protein to carb is almost equal, but both are eclipsed by fat and sodium. I had grilled chicken and steak, veggies, steamed rice...almost exactly what I had for lunch today but the difference between restaurant and traditional preparation definitely expose that not all Asian cuisine is healthy! Its amazing to me, every food has it's own taste and they can certainly be complimented, but I'm always happiest when I can really taste the food itself.

Wow, I can really tell that my body is building muscle. I'm protein-hungry *all the time*. I'm feeding heavy Japanese cuisine sans rice. Seaweeds, lean meats, lots and lots of fresh vegetables. I felt stronger in the pool today and hated that I had to leave early in deference to the threatening sky, esp. now that it's brilliantly sunny. Oh well, I have to move some furniture and do some heavy housework today so perhaps its best I saved some energy.
