Having a bit of a realization at the moment.

Today is one of those days where nothing really seems to be going the way I had planned or hoped. I woke up in a funky mood, since the kids were fighting before my feet hit the floor. I am starting my period, so that automatically makes me prone to crankiness, as well as gives me a headache and nasty cramps and stomachache. I knew that I needed to run today, though, so I had planned to put in 4 or 5 miles on the treadmill.

After dealing with a bazillion different distractions (cleaning up broken glass in the kitchen, rebooting laundry and washing a load of bathmats from a cat accident, cleaning up the cat accident, chasing away Jehovah's Witnesses), I wrestled the treadmill out into the middle of the living room and got started.

One mile of brisk walking to warm up- no problem. One mile of 5 mph jogging- a few slips here and there, but mostly okay. Bumped the speed up to 6 mph, ready to go three miles, and realized very quickly that the belt was really loose, and I was going to wipe out if I tried to keep it that fast. Husband is at work, so can't tighten the belt for me at the moment- great. Now what?

The kids are watching Cars (I know- bad mom using the TV as a babysitter, but I don't do it often) and I have at least an hour and a half before they start pestering me again.

So I popped my Jillian Michaels DVD in and did Level 3 of the 30 Day Shred, and ROCKED it. Caught a glimpse of myself in the reflective door of the entertainment center while doing traveling pushups, and was thrilled to see the definition of muscles working in my shoulders and arms, and sweat dripping off my hair and face. Finished it, stretched, drank a bottle of water, and sat down.

That was when I realized that this time a year ago, the "sitting down" part likely would've come right after the barrage of distractions. But it didn't.

And if it hadn't happened then, it would've happened when I realized that dragging the treadmill out was hard work. But it didn't.

And if it hadn't happened then, it would've happened when I realized the belt was loose on the treadmill. But it didn't.

And if it hadn't happened then, it would've happened when I was done putting the treadmill away. But it didn't.

Instead of giving up, I did what I needed to do to get my workout in- and I got it in. And I'm glad that I did, and I feel great. If that isn't proof of a change of mind and heart, I don't know what is.

Uhm, can I have some (non fat) frozen yogurt now?
