Punkmime's Journal, 09 May 17

I can not tell you how frustrated I am right now. My calorie count is pretty much always between 800-1100. I have cut out caffeine, sugar and pretty much any simple carb. I go to the gym regularly. Still, the weight just will NOT come off.

I have to fight constantly just to slow down the gain. Before my hysterectomy, I had no trouble at all maintaining my weight. I ate basically whatever I wanted, in small/normal serving sizes, and stayed between a size 4 and a size 6 with no real effort. I am now a size 16 (moving into an 18 rapidly).

I have no idea what to do. I think I'm going to have to go see a doctor just to make sure there isn't anything going on. I hate the idea, though. I feel like telling a doctor that there must be something wrong because I can't lose weight will result in skepticism and a lot of generic diet tips. Hopefully having a food/exercise journal will help. (Part of my journal is here, but lately I have been using Samsung Health. I like this better. I am returning to FatSecret).

That sounds soooo frustrating! When you exercise at the gym, do you monitor your heart rate? The "conventional wisdom" is that best for fat burning is relatively moderate heart rate for long periods .. like for me, it's walking at 3.3-3.5 mph at a small (1 - 2%) incline for 60-90 minutes.. and I wear a heart rate monitor and keep it below 113 (I'm 64) .. usually aiming for around 104 (but it takes me sometimes 20-30 minutes to get there .. stays in the 90's for quite some time). I don't know if there is much science around that, but it can't hurt to try something new if what you are doing isn't working . Plus asking the doctor if your operation (or anything else) is a contributing factor (assuming your doctor knows much about diet and fitness and weight loss -- its a specialty of its own I expect). GOOD LUCK and don't give up!!

I encourage you see a doctor. They are not all skeptics. It may be a metabolism problem. Hypothyroid will sometimes make weight loss difficult. Are you counting macros or calories? If it fits your macros (IIFYM.COM) is a good website to explain macros. Less than 1000 calories should be more than what's needed for weight loss, but depending what you eat it may or may not work. First you would need to figure what you need depending on sex, age, weight, height, level of activity, etc. Fat burning - this concept some have a difficult time understanding. It's better accomplished by low impact continues cardio (aerobic) exercise. Keeping your target heart rate between 55-65%. Fat burning does not start until after 20 minutes of exercise. So aim for at least 40-60 minutes, but obviously start slowly.

After my sweet daughter had a hysterectomy, she had the same problem. Took a while and a lot of tests, but they did discover hormonal problems and when that balanced out, so did she. Take a journal of food and exercise to let them know it's not just a M&M problem :-).

your calorie count seems a little on the low side- I agree with the previous post about counting macros, that has made a huge difference for me. Increasing my protein intake and lowering my carbs has helped significantly with cravings. Also since you go to the gym already try some strength training in addition to your cardio. Strength training is really important for helping to regulate blood sugar and building lean muscle mass helps to burn calories.
