Krauss_Queen's Journal, 27 Dec 16

My husband and I have decided to have some friendly competition. Starting Jan. 1st. My goal is to lose 5 lbs a month, drink at least 8 bottles of water a day, drink no more than 2 pops a day (eventually I want to stop pop), drink no more than 2 cups of coffee, drink 1 cup of hot green tea, have a 20 min "wake up" workout and stretch session, hit the gym at least 3 times a week, and log EVERYTHING I eat. I feel like this is a good place to start. I am using this site and my Fitbit to track my progress. If anyone has any tips I'm all eyes.

Absolutely wean yourself off pop/soda. Few things are worse for you. Three of the best things for weight loss: beans/legumes (e.g. lentils), veggies, and tea (no sugar.) There will be no shortage of 'diet experts' with conflicting advice to offer you. A lot of this is because there is no universal 'best' diet for everyone. It depends on your genetics, activity level, and the microbial community in your gut. For example, red meat contains toxins that some people can break down and others cannot - it depends on whether you have the right microbes in your gut to help you. Here's the lowdown: when you eat, you're not just feeding yourself, you're feeding the community in your gut, which has all kinds of tricks up its sleeve for making sure it stays fed - like sending you hunger cues or altering your sense of smell (to make that cookie irresistible?) I think that (ideally) slim people don't have to exert as much willpower to stay away from unhealthy food and are steered by their microbes toward healthier choices. Obese people and slim people have different microbes, but it's not any magic. It's a matter of creating job openings for good bacteria so that they crowd out the bad ones. Many of the good bacteria are fiber specialists. Beans, lentils, baked potatoes (w/skin), veggies, fruits (fresh or dried), minimally processed whole grains - all of these things create an environment that supports their growth, ultimately paying dividends to you. After that, add some healthy fats in moderation - olives, nuts, avocados, olive oils, coconut oil, fancy cheese. I consider good quality tea and spices to be mild 'drugs' that can be a significant help to weight loss. Drink lots of tea, good tea. Not Lipton packets. Check out Adagio or Maya tea. Be generous with your spices, especially ones like cayenne and ginger.

^ I would temper that to say that REFINED sugar is the devil as far as weight loss is concerned - because it's nothing but pure caloric energy in an unnatural state! I don't think everyone could do it, but my experience is that I can eat through entire jars of honey and pounds of dates while still losing weight.

All carbs turn to sugar and make you gain weight so I stand by my comment; Sugar is the devil!

Good for you for trying to wean yourself off of pop. Chemical water and sugar isn't nutritious. :) You will do just fine!

Don't just try: do it! No pop - either sweetened with sugar or artificially. Just get rid of it: drink water, seltzer, tea or coffee.
