JockoT's Journal, 09 Aug 16

I have lost control of this whole diet business. My weight is increasing by a pound every two or three days, and after doing my CICO sums it is Fat I am gaining, not fluid retention or increased muscle. I just don't know what to do about it. I am reducing my Carbs and increasing my Protein and I still feel hungry all the time. This has all come about since my surgery and spell in hospital.
I have been for a good walk this morning, but why I am bothering, as that just makes me ravenous for a big breakfast, I don't know. I am drinking about 2.5 Litres of water per day, plus tea, coffee and the occasional diet soda. I am keeping myself busy. I bought another car a couple of weeks back, and I have been spending time faffing with that. Cleaning, claying, waxing and generally tinkering with it. I seldom sit down.

Add to that running all over the house trying to catch a pocket rocket kitten and I am getting tons of exercise. This morning she tried to run upstairs and I tried to grab her. She dived one way, then the other and so did I. Unfortunately I struck the side of my head on the end of the banister, knocking myself out. When my wife came to my assistance she says both cats were standing looking at me, quite concerned. I was only out for a few seconds but I now have a cracking headache. I haven't felt sick or anything, so apart from a huge bruise I think I am okay.

Ooops, you seem to get a lot of 'exitement' in your life resently ... To me it seems like you are doing things right, so yes why the gain? Are you sure it's not muscle mass? Might it be that your body is keeping hold of everything you eat/drink as it was 'starved' after your surgery? I'm sure you will be able to shift it seeing you are aware of what's going on and increasingly more active. Have a great day!

I am so sorry that you are struggling at the moment love. I have read many articles that seem to suggest that once we have been very fat and start to lose weight our bodies sabotage us (see The Biggest Loser USA) and that it can take up to a year after reaching goal weight for the metabolism to start working efficiently again. I don`t have any advice as I am not where you are weight wise but as always offer continued support. Are there any successful "maintainers" on here who you could ask for advice?

It wouldn't be too bad if I was down to target weight. I still have 2 stone to go. Try as I might I cannot budge it.

Please be careful. You are not severely overweight. It might happen if you stop focusing on it so much. Best wishes.

Your body is probably still trying to heal itself and find it's new normal after the surgery. You are so dedicated and determined, so I doubt that you are doing something wrong. Keep your head up, Jocko! You can and WILL do this! By the way, congrats on the new car!

Thanks. I still prefer the old one but my wife forced me to see sense and get something much cheaper to run. This one gives twice the mpg that the last one did!

When my liver doctor saw me and my blood tests she had a fit. First thing she did was tell me low fat for a year. Then I had to switch to Low Carb (sub 50 per day) for another year. Because me blood results were heading the right way for her she kept me on it for another year. I started at 21 stone. I'm now 17 stone and my blood results mean she was happy but wasn't happy with my lack of weight loss. She wants me down to 13 stone. So she has me now on a medically managed diet programme that reminds me of starving. I had a couple of McD's beforehand to have a bit of a blow out but am heading right down. Check out my food diary. Bloody nightmare programme imho but needs must. Your shenanigans sound like a lot more joy. I'd swap! Lol.

Low Carb is definitely the way for me to go. It is just that so much which is convenient for our lifestyle, is high on Carbs.

There's a lot of research to show that eating at maintenance for a week out of every twelve helps to avoid the dreaded metabolism slow down.

Oh my, your poor head, I've bonked my head HARD, but never enough to knock myself out. All I can suggest is look at your calorie intake prior to surgery when you were doing well. Have you changed anything+ less carbs, more exercise? Anything? I know for me, no matter how much I eat, I tend to be I the "always hungry" side. I've always been like that, especially when I work out. If you find an answer, let me know. Maybe your body is just adjusting from the rapid weight loss you had after surgery. It could be the time I'd year, ha. Everyone seems to be having a header time right now. Hmmm... Feel better! Don't stop exercising! Enjoy it😁😁
