My SO (significant other)likes to eat out. It's how he grew up. His mother actually told his father when they were newly married that she could be great in one room of the house.....he could choose which room. (Wish I could have know this lady. She sounds like a hoot.) As you can image it wasn't the kitchen and they started a lifestyle of eating mostly at restaurants.
I love to cook. I love everything about it - everyone socializing in the kitchen, music playing, chopping and peeling and slicing all of the fresh ingredients, knowing exactly what is in every dish you prepare. SO, not so much. He likes variety, to order and have his food prepared, brought to the table and the dishes taken away with no clean up. It's a relationship compromise that I've made (rough, huh?) I do ask that we plan where we will eat so I can Google the restaurant and determine if they have a couple of moderately healthy options.
Last night was his night to choose. He chose one of those family style, comfort food places. ARG! He got the "eat your body weight in food for $9.99" special and I ordered a chef salad, no dressing. I even picked off the croutons. Everything was dandy until he offered me a hush puppy. For those of you who may not know what a hush puppy is - it's a fried ball of corn batter. I've never really been a fan but last night, that little golden heart attack was calling my name. What a siren song! I caved and ate it. It was hot and sweet and starchy and felt so naughty. It was like food crack! I couldn't put it down. I was obsessed. I was punished later with a tummy ache and some gastrointestinal "difficulties".
Isn't it weird that once you can't have something that's all you can think about whether you like it or not? I wonder if I need Carbs Anonymous?
