I am finally getting myself a new doctor. I have been chronically tired for three years. Tired to the point where I cannot make it through the day without falling asleep at my desk/ not being able to make it past 8pm without soooo much coffee. I have also not been able to lose weight for two of these years. I never had this much trouble losing weight before. I am starting to think whatever is making me tired is also the reason I cannot lose weight. I really hope she helps me find out what is wrong. My previous doctor did the basic labs and went from thinking I had lymphoma to.... you are young, you are fine... Clearly if you thought I had lymphoma, I am not fine, just because my vitamin and thyroid levels are okay. I get some physical activity daily. I at least walk 30 minutes a day, and weekends I at least clean and run errands. On good days I do 30 minutes of exercise in the morning plus I walk 30 mins to 1 hour. I eat healthy most of the time. I just cut back my alcohol intake from 6 days a week to 2 days a week and on those two days I am drinking less than I did. Still no weight loss. I actually gained weight. Just looking to not be so tired all the time. It is seriously taking a toll on my social and work life.

Take a look/listen to Dr. Mark Hyman, MD - nutrition expert/guru. DrHyman.com. He has helped millions and no longer suffers from chronic ailments himself. Lots of free info on his site. Or google his podcasts.

You might want to get your thyroid check out if yoy haven't. Take your temperature every day and if it's lower than 98.6 chances are your thyroid need iodine and you could be iron deficient. It's important when dieting to get a blood panel dine often, I do it every month for everything from vitamin and minerals to hormonal imbalances.

I echo the concern about Thyroid. Most docs look at the range and if you fall in the "normal" range then they think you're peachy. The thing is, the normal range isn't always the best fit for every person. It takes a GOOD Doc or Endo to be willing to think outside the box on this issue. I'm still looking for a good one. Hope you get this resolved soon. I know how frustrating it can be to feel wiped out just living a normal life.

Yes, read up on thyroid. The typical thyroid blood test may show adequate levels of thyroid hormone, but that is by no means the whole story. You can have normal amounts in your blood, but if your body isn't "taking it up" then it isn't doing you any good. There are additional blood tests required to determine this. Friends I have known with low thyroid have said the biggest symptom was feeling exhausted. I also agree that Dr. Hyman is a great source for information.

Wow thanks everyone! I actually took my temp last week when I was not feeling well and it was low. Strange. All of this really helps!

Could it be adrenal burnout?

Go to an endocrinologist... It could also be your adrenal glands...

Oh yeah, adrenal exhaustion will make you tired. Also a vitamin D deficiency, which they can determine with a blood test and is a very common problem.

If your having wide spead pain too it might be Fibromyalgia. I spent several years trying to find out my problem it was such a relief to know it wasn't in my head. You might want to see a Rheumatologist there are a lot of autoimmune diseases.

I agree - see a specialist - endocrinologist to address your fatigue.

There's a whole bunch of reasons you might be tired. Obviously you get any medical reasons checked out, and your right to go to see another doctor for a second opinion, but if the medical all checks out fine, then you should look at other things. Work, stress and lifestyle can all have a big effect on our energy levels. I remember five years ago, when I first started teaching at the university, I was so stressed that I was mentally exhausted every day. I would sleep 9 hours a day and still feel sleepy all the time. When the term ended, I could relax and the exhausted feeling went away. It was a really stressful time in my life, even when my daughter was born and I had to wake in the middle of the night for her crying, I was not as tired as I was from the teaching. Other things to look at is what you are eating, some food make us more tired than others. Even if the food is health, it might not feel right in your body. For example, I find sweet potato (yams) bloat me up and I'll be wanting a snooze two hours after lunch. You might want to review your eating habits and keep a diary of what you ate and how you felt after that item. Maybe you have an issue with lactose in the milk, or with the gluten in your bread, or something else. Of course, if you are feeling tired, then you do less. Even though you might be exercising, your going to be less active throughout the whole day because you feel tired. Reduced activity means weight gain. Ironically, reduced activity and weight gain might also make you sleepy, creating a downward spiral.

Have a medical check up just to make sure all is well. Then investigate LCHF lifestyle, just maybe this is the answer to your problem. I follow the LCHF lifestyle, my energy levels have just skyrocketed, lost almost 30kgs in 8 months and am so much healthier. Check out my bio. Good luck and take care.
