This whole time I thought the chinooks on your dinner plate were from a seafood store. My bad🤦🏻♀️ I knew you foraged mushrooms but chinooks too? Beyond impressed😍 Do you use their heads to make a fish stock?

Sometimes the salmon is store-bought - coho & sockeye - but the chinook & steelhead are caught by yours truly 🎣😎. But don’t be too impressed @yfritz cause this year my catches have been minimal. Still learning how to hook them. Spring Chinook are finnicky to the supreme. Or maybe I just a slow learner. 🤷♂️ I usually smoke the heads, collars and bellies if the fish is big enough. But stock from oily salmon like springers can be a bit strong & off putting. Definitely fish head soup for other fish though.

I should have known that you caught them, as I don’t remember seeing chinook salmon at grocery stores. It’s usually coho, sockeye or Atlantic salmon here. Aren’t chinooks huge though? All I can think of is an epic image of a ferocious grizzly catching a chinook! Ima start calling you Grizzly🐻😱

The size of chinook aka King Salmon are dependent on river system, time of year and how long the remain at sea before returning home to "spawn and die”. Spring chinook are generally smaller 10-30lb but most in this river are mid to upper teens (3-4 yrs old). There are 2-year fish called jacks (bucks) which return to make sure the hens gets fertilized in case the big guys didn’t do their job. The Fall kings can get to 50-60 lbs in this river system but that rare these days. Most are 20-30lbs I think. The Alaskan fish can be monsters.
