Bionici's Journal, 17 Jul 24

This is an odd day for us. I played golf yesterday, and it was hot (read: HOT) at almost 100 degrees. But I kept myself hydrated by drinking about 100 oz of water while on the golf course and about 30 oz prior playing. This AM came early since my wife had to be at a surgery center early to have the 1st of 2 cataracts repaired. All went well, and afterwards we went to a local Mom & Pop restaurant for breakfast. I probably had my days fill of calories at breakfast, but had a light lunch and will have a light dinner. BTW, my omelet was really delicious. I feel for my wife, since even though she is an RN, she was concerned about the surgery. I've been supportive, and know generally what she is going through since I had cataract surgery in 1995 and in 2001. As a commercial for being properly prepared when being outside in the sun for extended periods, I am thoroughly convinced that my cataracts and also subsequent basel cell & squamous cell skin cancer are from the many years of my pleasure & competitive golf, beach time, and time spent on a boat growing up. Of course, when I was growing up, really good sun screen products had not been invented. Thankfully, my cataracts were repaired, and my arms, head, and face are checked & sprayed periodically. As a point of reference, I was 47 when I had my 1st cataract surgery. Also, I've had 2 minor surgeries on my neck & a "burn & scrape" procedure to my arm to mitigate the skin cancer. In any event, please, PLEASE wear adequate sunscreen and sunglasses when out in the sun. It will make life much more enjoyable in later years. That's my sermon for the day with a hearty nod of agreement from my wife. :) Everyone have a wonderful week. God is good !!

Sent a prayer for a speedy recovery for your wife. I agree about sunscreen. And sunglasses too.

Yearofhealth2023, yes, and all went well. Actually, the surgery itself only takes about 10 - 15 minutes. But, they have the patient wait for about an hour after to make sure all is OK. The practices have really changed since I had my first cataract surgery in 1995 & prior. A few years before I had mine, a patient had to lay on their back with their head between sandbags for up to 2 weeks,...and not move. In my 1st surgery, I went to a surgical center as an in-patient status. I was put in a bed, etc...and then taken to the operating room on a gurney. The actual operation took about an hour. My 2nd surgery in 2001 was completely different. I went to the surgeon's office (actually a very small surgery center). They called me in, and told me to hop up on the table. They gave me a small sedative which sort of put me about 1/2 way under. I looked at the clock and it was 10:50. The doc said, "OK, it's over. You can get up". I looked at the clock again and it was 11:00 AM. I had not changed into a medical gown. They asked me if I wanted some coffee and donuts, and then an hour later they released me. Then, my wife and I went out to breakfast,...like today. Amazing. Sure is different from the 2 knee surgeries I had to repair them from injuries.

I had cataract surgery a few years ago. Best thing I ever did. They did mono surgery on me. I now see far away with right eye and up close with left eye. It's great! Takes a minute to train your brain but no longer need glasses at all.Hope your wife has good results! And yes, sunscreen is essential!!

Diana1234, the same with me. Although I was having all of the classic symptoms of cataracts, I also had very poor eyesight,...nearsighted at 20/1000+ in each eye. The bottoms of my glasses' lens were so thick that they cut into the cheek area just below my eyes. I would take a file and grind the lens edge down in that area just to get relief. I was looking to have RK, and was told they could not mitigate eyes with 7+ diopters and mine were 11. But, an optometrist told me I definitely had cataracts in both eyes, and one was ready. An opthamologist said the the left was ready, so it was done. At that time RK was about 1500-2000 per eye. The cataract surgery cost about 100 for the 1st eye, and 50 for the 2nd since they were considered "medical" and not elective eye surgery. The results were amazing, and could not believe how it felt to have 20/20 without glasses and a contact. My right eye still has a contact for the astigmatism. Best thing ever done for my eyes. The thing that really surprised me was that I had cataracts surgery done at 47. Apparently most cataracts are mitigated in people that are older. Thank you, and yes the sunscreen is now an essential part of my regimen when in the sun. Gotta go back to the dermatologist and be sprayed a couple of more times in 2 weeks. Also, the sun sure has made my arms look like the skin on an elephant. :)

You are fortunate to have such great effects from your cataract surgery. My dad had severe myopia also, but had only cataract done at about age 60. This created a problem—he thought his eyes saw 2 different planes. I realized later the eyeglass-corrected eye had a smaller view than the cateract-fixed 20-20 clear lens eye, and he couldn’t wear a contact lens. He had to quit driving, and, I believe, this isolation resulted in a decline of his cognition, accelerating dementia.

My LASIK surgery regressed about halfway. Now, I pay about $900 per year for Sam’s Club contact lenses which provide subpar vision correction. My vision limiting and frustrating. But I still regard my vision is a miracle. I am amazed I see as well as I do. Maybe it’s a myopic thing.

My husband just had his second cataract surgery this morning. This one was a bit more difficult and he had to lie flat on his back for 45 minutes before I could take him home. He is very excited as he had toric lenses implanted to address his astigmatism and may not even need readers.

Tink1953, hopefully your husband will be satisfied with the new toric lenses. At the time I had my cataract surgery, my astigmatism was so bad that they could not address it with the lenses. So, I have to wear a contact in my right eye. My left eye is not quite as bad, and does not need the contact. When I had my 1st surgery in a hospital setting in 1995, I had to lay quiet for 45 - 60 minutes. When I had my 2nd one 6 years later, I got off the surgery table, got dressed, had a donut & OJ, and waited for the surgeon to do a follow-up. That was it.

Bliss2Jessie, I was very fortunate that the cataract surgery was successful for my myopia. It was so overwhelming when wearing prescription glasses. Toric contact lenses were a blessing, but when the cataracts became an issue, I was thankful to have that since RK & Lasik was so expensive. I was seeking to have RK or Lasik since I did know at the time that I had a cataract issue, and I was seeking to have my vision corrected from RK or Lasik. The price for RK & Lasik was almost cost prohibitive since it was so expensive & elective. Cataract surgery was covered by my medical plan and was $100 for the 1st and $50 for the 2nd. $900 is really steep. WOW !! Hope you can find a different & less expensive place to buy them.

I had both eyes done two days apart and I am so glad now I can see and do not wear glasses. She will love having the eye sight back.

Golfgirl60, my wife has been blown away by the difference in acuity from the 1st cataract operation. She has worn glasses since about a year before we were married. Thing is, though she has a cataract in her other eye, her vision in that eye is still 20/25. So, she has been wondering if she wants to have it done. However, she is still leaning toward having the procedure next week. As far as I was concerned about my cataracts, I wanted them removed. It was a no-brainer for me since my eyesight was so bad. Happy you had success with your operations.
