So I think work is my major downfall. I have an extremely sedentary job. I work nights (12 hour shifts). The majority of my night is spent in a recliner dozing off and on. I do not sleep properly 5 nights a week. During the week, I usually get about 2 hours worth of sleep after I get my son on the bus. My schedule is so screwy. Apparently this is not working with weight loss, but on the contrary, working against it.

I don't know what to do. I feel so discouraged. I cannot change things right now work wise until my patient passes away. I love my job. It's just seemingly working against my goals at the moment. I have been in this position for over a year now. I have gained approximately 40 pounds in the past year. *sigh*
Maybe I will start just doing salads for dinner or I can perhaps find some kind of good shake or smoothie substitute so that I'm not inhaling too many calories at night since I will be so sedentary.

That is a really hard position to be in. I've always had a sedentry day job, so I can't say I understand the sleep deprivation, but you can always try to ensure that you walk around once an hour, or doing a set of exercises - there are a ton you can do without any equipment.

Hm...definitely a challenging situation. Personally I'm not really a salad person, so I'd say don't con yourself into thinking salads will make you lose weight. Eat them if you like them, by all means, but I'd rather eat "meal"-type food for the same number of calories. Meal replacement shakes are ok if you're busy, but if you're sitting around I'm not sure that would help. I can relate to working 12 hr overnights because I did it for a lot of years, but you still have 12 other hours of the day that you can work some activity into. Of course some should be allocated for sleep, but can you set aside 30 minutes to go for a walk each day? That will help with your insomnia, trust me, & you won't feel like crap for sitting around all day. Something to think about.
