le-ah.'s Journal, 30 May 23

Looking to add some home based exercise into my routine to hopefully build strength. I’m 40 and realizing muscle mass really can take a dive as I age. I’m a bit restricted as I need to be able to do it at home when my son is asleep or occupied, space limited to my bedroom or living room, and I’m not interested in buying expensive equipment. Ideally 15-20 minutes 3-4x a week. FS peeps into fitness - would appreciate suggestions!! 💪🏋️‍♂️

You can do quite a lot with a good set of resistance bands. I personally use 3 types of bands. The rubber style with handles for anchored exercises, long fabric loop style for exercises where the band is in contact with my body, and short fabric loops for leg work.

I have resistant bands! both that you described actually…still in their original packaging 🤦🏼‍♀️ maybe I’ll look up some exercises and actually use them lol! I am familiar with leg exercises with them actually, just a bit foggy.

Also no idea why the male symbol was added to my original post at the end , very strange 🤔

The symbol thing appeared on one of mine the other day too…🤷🏼‍♂️ Anyway, here’s a link to a decent website that may be helpful. If you’re interested, I can see what I have at home as far as band workouts too, but you should be able to accomplish a good base with this (as long as the intensity and consistency are there 😉) https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/the-ultimate-resistance-band-workout-how-to-train-with-exercise-bands/

I purchased an exercise bike on Amazon and it’s been so worth it.

I do strength at home as well and found two purchases did it for me: a set of adjustable dumbbells so it doesn’t take up room and I don’t have to keep buying new weights as strength increases and a yoga mat. Online searched/Youtubed/IG followed until I built a full-body routine I liked.

@healthycurves23 I never considered adjustable dumbbells, that’s a great idea.

YouTube has some great dance videos these are fun, plus you exercise your brain as well. I like 375 Dance Sudio with Amanda. Also Essentrics workouts They’re very light and easy you don’t even think it’s worth your time, but the next day… oh ya you know it. ☺️

Thank you sallymax1 for the fun suggestion! I hadn’t considered dance videos but I actually think it’d be a great way to incorporate movement in my day :)

On equipment: I would suggest going and trying out a couple of different types of adjustable weights before buying. Reason being is that some people find some styles to be very awkward or uncomfortable, while some other brands are perfect…and it varies from person to person, so it’s not like someone can say “this is the good one”. Another thing I would suggest, if you are comfortable with it, and it’s accessible, and are do inclined…you can save a ton of money buying lightly used equipment from Facebook marketplace, kijiji, craigslist, etc… This is my home gym, and almost everything I got slightly used. But I also got all of this equipment for under $1000. The only things bought new are resistance bands (Amazon) , and dumbbells/rack (Costco). This is my setup if you’re interested in what I use: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs7mzquoHDq/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

@StomachMonkeys - I might start poking around those sites actually for used equipment. I would like to save a few bucks where possible! Thanks for the heads up about adjustable weights/dumbbells, I wouldn’t have even thought about that. ☺️

Body Groove is a fun dance program where you absolutely don't need to know how to dance! You can do as much or as little as you want, and there are motivational challenges too. I love it, but haven't been able to participate since Easter, can't wait to get back to it!

FitOn is a free online app raft has a ton of workouts - everything frolic stretching and yoga to strength / hiit/ Pilates. And you can filter it by without length anywhere from 5 minutes to 45. Equipment wise you can do a lot with body weight, add some bands and two sets of dumbbells like 5-8 and 10-15 pound ones and you can really get a great workout.
