nicholaix's Journal, 06 Feb 15

My 5 year old has six cavities. The dentist is going to put him to sleep to fix them. He feels that our diet is lacking in the proper nutrients as vegans. For starters the child drinks milk and eats cheese. I am the only true vegan in our house ( and even that is questionable these days) and my teeth have always been perfect. He does eat a primarily vegetarian diet but I am betting he gets more nutrients than the dentist judging from his appearance.

Why are people so judgemental about vegans? Really? You have to be a little more aware of what you are eating to be healthy but isn't that true of any diet? Why the kneejerk "Vegan is BAD!"?

Anyhoo that guy really irritated me. In other news I ordered a juicer. A Cuisinart centrifugal one, all I could afford. Trying to sneak fruits and veggies into my Autism boys is a full time job sometimes and hopefully this will help. I am sure I will be picking FS brains when it arrives this weekend.

Hey all my low carb friends, where do you buy your nuts in bulk?

Shame on him for being so judgmental. My Sister was the queen of junk food when she was young and had PERFECT teeth. I am the one who got the cavities. Go figure?

I don't think that was correct of him to say that. As long as your kid is getting proper nutrition (and sounds like it) it shouldn't be an issue. Some things are possibly genetic though (my husband for example has weak enamel, but not due to poor nutrition--it's something that seems to run through his whole paternal side of the family) Who knows?

Husband and I both have had extensive work done over the years. They found kiddo's first cavity about a year ago. He's 35. Genetics does play a role. Nuts--Costco for me. Maybe BJ's, Sam's.

Nuts - haven't tried buying bulk but thats a good idea because I make my own trail mix by the gallon jar full. I get large(1 lb.) bags of several types of nuts, mix them with pepitas or pumpkin seeds and low sugar cranberries. My stores are Sam's or Meijers.

there is a stereotype that a vegan diet is deficient in protein you can eat beans/rice, soy protein powder with cereal, tofu with rice and vegetables, vital wheat gluten in breads or make seitan, or sprinkle nutritional yeast on sauces or eat it plain, and nuts with grains all of these food combinations contain all the protein that you need and you just need to take a multiple vitamin and a separate 1000 mg b12 methyl cobalamin vitamin

Doctors and Dentists (and yes others as well) can be sooo arrogant at times...as one who had tried to have good oral hygiene I have still spent hours in the dentist's chair.:( Have a great WeeKend and don't let a "jarhead" dentist spoil it.

Many in the health profession are bogus hypocrites. They tell you what you should be doing with your life, yet 90% of them don't even follow their own advice. Keep doing what you feel is best for yourself and children :)

you are right on with health professionals being hypocrites i work in a hospital and the foods that doctors and nurses are eating is doughnuts, taco bell, mcdonalds hamburgers, cakes, cookies, nachos with cheese dips, every nite, chocolates they sit and eat fat, sugar and then you hear oh that nurse died of a stroke the other day and now you know why health professionals really don't care about their own health but others does it make sense?

Definitely!!! They are not trained in nutrition. I was never a vegan. When I was a kid they would x-ray my teeth, plan dentist appointments guessing on when my teeth would come in. They had cavities before emerging from my gums!! I could walk to the dentist office from school when I was in 2nd grade to fill those cavities. It's not always nutrition.

Hey - have you read "Grain Brain" by Dr. Perlmutter. It is very interesting and address nutrients and many different "ailments."

lol funny you say that, I was just discussing that book with a friend. Some of the same studies are used in arguments for vegetarian/whole grain diets so we were discussing the bias and spin that anyone can put on studies and data, whether or not the data is scientifically gathered or even appropriate to what its being. An example being that China's rates of diabetes and heart disease are going up. One person attributes it to the large amount of rice and lack of animal products in the traditional diets. Another person says it only in urban areas where they are adopting a western way of eating incuding meat and dairy and that is skewering the entire countries numbers. A third person says its the use of pesticides thats causing the increased rates. Who's right? Who knows? In my own opinion, I tend not to believe someone whose agenda is to sell their own supplements, books, and meal plans. However, that being said, Perlmutters recommendations do lean towards a whole foods diet so compared to what most people eat it is a huge step closer to what the human body needs. Aren't you sorry you asked lol?

John, so right!! Basic complementary proteins that anyone following a vegetarian or vegan diet should know. I cringe when anyone tells me the are going to get healthy following a vegetarian diet eating sales, broccoli and carrots. It is a plan for malnutrition. If you are a vegetarian paying attention to complementary proteins you also need to pay attention to a few thing that are easily deficient in a vegetarian WOE. Iron, B vitamins, calcium. I take supplements to add to my diet and one for help with osteoporosis and migraines. I'm not vegetarian but I have spent since 1971 learning about the nutrition and cooking many many meatless meals.
