NatashaChiara's Journal, 14 Jan 15

At the end of 2010 I was told I had "fatty liver," my sugar levels were high and that I was at risk for diabetes if I didn't try to lose at least five pounds. I'm pretty much allergic to alcohol and have never cared for it, never been drunk or hungover a day in my life so "fatty liver" took me by surprise. I already had an uncle and cousin diagnosed with diabetes and I wasn't about to let that happen to me. At that point in the Doctor's office I weighed in at 239 - the horror! I can honestly say that the tone and attitude (very rude) of the doctor annoyed the hell out of, but also motivated me and I thought to myself "screw 5 pounds.” That night I came home, dusted off my stationary bike and rode it for 10 minutes. I found Fatsecret, bought a scale and got serious, I then went on to lose 65 pounds. I eventually made my way up to 50 minutes and that stationary bike got used almost every night for a year, it became my best friend. I had a lifestyle change.

In July of 2012 I was at 174 and then life started getting in the way, it was a hell of summer, and I stopped progressing. I had, on the well meaning advice of a loved one, stopped riding the bike every day and by this point had stopped riding it altogether. By the spring of 2013 I had gained back 20 lbs and it seemed like nothing I was doing was working. I couldn't get myself back on that bike, I stopped weighing in daily and I stopped caring about progress. In January 2014 I was at 214 and as of Christmas 2014 I was at 228.

In the two years that quit caring I was still doing Zumba and actually became an instructor. The three things I was no longer doing were riding the stationary bike, weighing myself and counting calories.

I had been interested in a fitness monitor for a while and when we drew names for Christmas my mom drew my name - I jokingly asked for a Fitbit and that is what I got. So here I am going over all my past stats and feeling very frustrated and disappointed in myself. I lost 65 pounds only to let myself gain back 54 pounds of it. I was more than halfway to my goal and now I'm starting all over again.

Since Christmas I've had my Fitbit on nonstop, started using Fatsecret again and logging my calories and workouts daily, weighing in daily, riding the stationary bike daily, going to Zumba three times a week and I've also picked up a fitness class at the Rec Center three times a week. I also got a very comfortable pair of walking shoes. I'll eventually add yoga and hooping again too. I'd also like to find a good, reliable fitness buddy. The best thing of all - I've dropped 9lbs!!!

My doctor seems to prefer that I use MFP and so does Fitbit but I like Fatsecret better, I'm keeping a log on both sites and at my next appointment I'll show her how much better FS is. I just wish my Fitbit worked with FS! Also, I can't seem to find an accurate calories burned calculator, I'm very disappointed that caloriesperhour.com is gone, it was THE best.

Here's to my new lifestyle change and dropping those 54 again!
