Wow! Our city's National Night Out event was awesome last night. I've never gone before, but as my husband was working at it, I decided to stop by with the kiddos after work. I expected games and maybe some treats, but I did NOT expect the full-out bar-b-que, live music, cotton candy, and bouncy houses. So, what started as a "we'll stop by for a half-hour" turned into a longer night resulting in kids falling asleep in the back of the car on the drive home.

Thus, on the food side, I didn't eat as I normally would for dinner. Sure I can enjoy a hot dog now and again, but it's the eating what's leftover on the kid's plates that puts me over. And darn it, they had chocolate chip cookies!!!

Running low on staple pantry items in the house so I need to skip the lunch time workout to run those errands. One of my goals is to set up a 'lunch packing' station at home so that my son has an easier time packing his lunches. Yes, I'm trying to teach my 6 year old to pack his own lunch. I've told him that his lunch needs to contain at least 3 things; a protein, a carb, and a fruit/vegetable. He's doing well at it. When he's done packing, I have him show me his lunch box and I have him identify each item as protein, carb, etc. Of course, he does good at identifying the fruit/veg, but still gets the protein and carb mixed up sometimes. Regardless, he's got the components in there.

Husband had a scare at work last night. His recount of the events that he told me this morning is starting to sink in...and shaking me a little. You know, as much as I may complain about my job, at least I don't have to worry about my computer deciding to pull a knife on me. Thus, my perspective today has been that of "I'm glad I'm at work today because if things had gotten worse with my husband's ordeal last night, I could have been at the hospital worrying about him."

So, hug your family and thank a police officer today.

That's awesome though, teaching him proper nutrition now means he'll carry it thru life...and OMG your poor husband, glad he's ok!!! That is soooo scary!

Wow, to both accounts - geting your son to pack his lunch, that's a fantastic idea! and to your husband's line of work. So true in how police officers put their lives on the line, dedication!

my brother is a police officer as well...boy, the stories he tells...I don't know how they do it...or my sister-in-law...he's dealt with some really bad people and been in some really bad situations...they really are brave! cheers to your husband, thanks for your service buddy!

I often joke with him about how 'normal' our crazy house must seem after some of the situations he encounters. A benefit to being married to him is he has no delusions of "the grass is greener" because he also see a lot of the 'muck' on the other side of the fence and is happy right where he's at :-)

I think teaching your son to pack his own lunch is a great idea! I have a 9 yr old daughter who does it but she has friends who can't do the simplest things for themselves. It drives me insane. Then they look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them where the fridge is instead of waiting on them hand and foot. Which.. I probably am nuts but still. lol So glad to hear your hubby is ok. I don't know how he or you do it.

I don't know if it's because I'm lazy or that I'm trying to raise self-sufficient kids that has me on this kick with lunch. When the summer started, he had to go back to day care. They provide a nice lunch, but he's being picky. That's when I told him that I don't pack lunches in the summer so he needs to learn to do it. However, I'm seeing there will be benefit to this when school starts again. We'll see how long I can drag this out :-) Yes, my husband does appreciate family, too, I think because of what he sees in the field. When he came home this morning he thanked us all a number of times for coming to the National Night Out event saying it was the highlight of his night seeing the family.

Love the lunchbox idea ~ not just him 'doing' it but understanding the nutritional basis of it. I think a lot of parents should do this; help kids understand early. I always sneak up on your journal - I don't know how you do it either (your husband).

We're nothing special. Just trying to make our way in the world, like the rest. I remember his reluctance to having kids because of all the "bad" he saw in the world. I reminded him we need to raise cops, too. Now, two kids later, we're seeing that we're doing OK with those two. Again, we're just doing our best.
