DeliriumTrigger's Journal, 08 Mar 21

Starting today, I'm switching things up and giving keto another try. I've been tracking calories for 6 weeks now, averaging about 1450. I've been pretty careful with my measurements and intake but I've only seen the scale drop between 2-4 pounds in that time frame.
I had a LOT of success with keto in 2018/2019. I was able to lose 25 pounds in about 4 months and felt fantastic, then I started trying to stay under 1200 calories as well to zoom towards my goal.  I found it very difficult to stay keto with such a low calorie budget so I switched over to CICO with no focus on carbs. That enabled me to hit my goal weight in June 2019. Unfortunately, I started obsessing about my calorie budget, seeking perfection instead of progress and feeling pretty bad about myself in the process. After a few months of 1200 a day and feeling starved, miserable, tired and sad, I gave up. Looking back, staying keto was never the issue, cutting down to 1200 calories or less was the issue. THAT number is just too strict for me and has set me up to fail over and over again.

I went totally off the rails, stopped tracking anything, stopped being active that winter and eventually put on 12 pounds.  Then the first covid wave hit and I found myself furloughed, bored and stressed. Gyms were closed, the weather was still frigid and I did nothing more than snack, binge watch TV, drink beer and nap. I gained 14 pounds in 6 weeks last March/April.

I feel like 1200 calories a day is just not healthy for me mentally to stick with but 1350 sounds doable. I'm calculating my macros and doing this with a fresh mindset and a lot of introspection.

Please share your favorite keto snacks, meals or success tips!

I like your plan. Please don't be scared to adjust that 1350 number if that doesn't work as planned. Your mental health is more important and keep at it until you find out what works for you.

Thank you, chesgreen! You are so right that I need to be flexible with my goals. 1200 might be plenty for other people my height or with a low BMR but after YEARS of weight gain/loss and yoyo dieting, I can finally see that 1200 isn't enough for me. I've spent years focusing sooo much on that number because that's what online calculators recommend for me. What I really need to do is discover what calorie limit is sustainable for me that also allows me to progress towards my goal. I'll try 1350 for awhile and see how that feels. Maybe it'll take me a year to hit my goal instead of 6 months - the time will pass either way, I may as well be happy and hopeful in the meantime!
