Yum! Have you tried the Delia Smith approach? I first discovered it last year. You literally put everything in the pan at at once and just whisk. No lumps!

it's not too difficult but you do have to keep stirring and whisking for no lumps. Melt butter then add flour mix then milk and whisk very quickly to prevent lumps 🙂
