Janelleas's Journal, 01 Jan 09

It's been a rough holiday this year for me. Too many parties, too many temptations. I was doing great right up till the end. I really want to focus on getting to my goal by May. I have a vacation in early April so it will be challenging, but if I can lose at a good steady rate and keep on track, it will encourage me and keep me motivated. I just want to DO IT... I have taken to long messing around and I just need to do it and learn how to live this healthier way forever. I want it... I want it.. I want it!! I want to wear jeans or slacks with a my shirt tucked in and belt!

about shutting the garage door on my fingers.. since someone asked

It happened about 12 years ago. We had an electric garage door opener but we were experiencing a power outtage, so I pulled the emergency release cord so that I could disconnect the garage door opener an open the door manually. There was a piece of rope tied to the door on the inside so that I could lift it and pull it along the track to open the door and get the car out. Once the car was out however I realized I was too short to reach the outside handle on the garage door and couldn't shut the garage door. So I put my hands in between the horizontal slats of the garage door with every intention of giving the door a shove downward and quickly removing my fingers...but the door went down so fast that it was amazing how fast that heavy door came down and trapped my fingers inside the portion of the garage door. My neighbor heard and saw the whole thing, including my cry's for help. I was unable to lift the heavy door using just my trapped fingers. the neighbor set me free and my hands were swollen immediately... neighbor took me in the house and made sure I got ice on my hands. Most painful thing I can ever remember happening to me. It happened on a Sunday and went to the doctors on Monday becuase it still hurt so bad I thought I might have broken some fingers. No broken fingers... but yes, all those fingernails turned black, dried up and fell off. Doc said he didn't think i would grow any nails back at all becaue the damage was so severe. However one year after the accident, I noticed thin little nails growing .. I now do have nails but they are very thin, wavy.. very wavy... and so now I get an acrylic put on top of my own nails.. no "tips".. just my own nails but the acrylic on top makes them smooth and pretty again. I am just thankful I grew some nails back so that I have something to put the acrylic on top of. I tell you, I would rather go through child birth than ever have my fingers caught in a garage door again.

You asked.. specially you JulieC.

I started phase one on Monday and have dropped 3.6 pounds since last Friday. I feel like I could be a bit stricter with my eating and lose a little more but I'm feeling empowered again. You can do it too!

Janelle, me too me too. Let's help each other crawl back in that there wagon!!! Ouch on the fingers! I slammed my thumb in a HEAVY Station Wagon door when I was in grade school and it never grew back right. But mine is actually REALLY tough and there are two layers to it. Our bodies are certainly interesting in how they heal and recover from such traumas.

I hope that the topic I bring up in response to your journal today isn't too touchy. I am nooooooo expert. I respect you soooo much and you have given me such valuable advice. The topic is age. As you know - I am 52. I am wondering - if at age 52, 56, 58, or 60 - we must simply eat "differently" somehow for the weight to come off and stay off. I am so naive about the topic of metabolism as it relates to age. I am also naive about exercise and its limitations. I learned yesterday that - as a 52-year-old - there was no way in he() I was going to keep up with the young fitness freaks during Kathy Smith's hard core work out! Mild pilates and walking are enough for me - although this summer - I did skip rope. Yesterday I zoomed in on a lady who looked "about my age." Her movements were modified and she did not hold heavy weights. Maybe you and I are going to experience weight loss at a steady but extremely gradual rate because of a slow motion metabolism. Maybe there is less room in our nutrition plan for the kinds of treats and cheats we have enjoyed lately. Just a thought. You are a strong and determined woman. If you say you will - then by golly - we know you will! We believe in you!

I forgot to tell ya - thanks for the fingers-in-the-garage-door anecdote. It was painful but interesting. Poor baby! Ouch!

I had a rough holiday season too, and I'm feeling your pain, Janelle! However, all of that is behind us now and it's time to move on! We can do this! It's going to be our year! I can feel it!

OOOOwwwww, you poor thing, that's terrible! I simply cannot imagine. Anyway, good luck to you and looking forward to your vacation. Janelle, it was one week, it's over... You looked in the face of adversity and you chose what was good for you at the time. I have no doubt you will get back on again now that the holidays are over. You make choices for you. Temptations are hard, I know, I've chosen to avoid them this season. Part of me really feels that I missed out on some fun, but another part of me feels that I want to be there for the future parties, and missing out on the 2008 festivities, bummer yes, but there's 2009, 2010, 2011 holidays to come. I'm looking towards the future. Now, I only have 1 DCD / month, in the future, maybe I can do 2 parties. You chose to enjoy yourself, there is not a thing wrong with that! Now let's get you back on the train for April!

CobraFan... darn I thought I already wrote a response here and I came back and its missing.. i wonder if I posted it in the wrong place? Anyway.. you are correct that being older is a disadvantage. Some of the factors are that we have lost muscle mass as we aged, we were and/or are less active and that slows us down. I am also hypothyroid and that causes me lose weight slower and with more difficulty than others too. It all adds up. I have 19 weeks before my birthday and 21 lbs to get to the goal I set for myself. I think its do-able but difficult. I will be happy if I just lose something every week and don't have any stalls. I fully intend to reach my goal in 2009. Birthday is what I am shooting for but I won't be disappointed if it takes longer... just that I am sure I can do it this year. 21 lbs in 12 months should be simple enough to do if I stay on track and follow my plan.. even with a few indulgences occassionally. You have done fantastic with the exercise and that will pay off for you too. Haven't you noticed how much more you can do now, that you could not do before?? more endurance? more flexability? more strength? Lets work on this... we still have bet to see which of us reaches 145 lbs first! veggiesyuk.. I swear I saw a post from you here and that I responded to it.. I swear I must have done something stupid to this journal today.. .maybe deleted things instead of posting?? Are you going to AZ this year?? we should all meet up there and enjoy warm weather when it is cold where we are.

No worries Janelle -- you took a minor detour on your trip (as did many of us!) and now we have our maps out and have recharted our trip to a healthy lifestyle! .....and ouch on the fingers in the garage door....

I saw a similar post on one of your journal entries with an earlier date. You may want to check your entries for December 30, 29, 28, etc. Thanks for not being offended by my reference to age. I wouldn't say that I am hypersensitive to that particular topic but I am hyper aware of my own age as it applies to weight loss, good health, nutrition, etc. Say! Don't feel bad about being confused regarding "where you put the post." At first - I thought your question about traveling to Arizona was for me. I was just about ready to respond by explaining that we will be traveling to South Carolina - when I realized that you were asking Veggies! Ha! Let's knock 'em out at boot camp! Okay?

Ouuchie!!! Thanks for sharing your garage-fingers story. Glad to hear your fingernails grew back. I guess the saving grace is that we don't have to deal w/this type of pain when trying to lose weight. =) Sorry to hear you had to deal w/this, Janelle. Hopefully, you'll never have to deal w/that type of pain ever again. Cheers to that, my buddy. =)
