RHerron's Journal, 26 Oct 10

YIKES!! I increased my carbs to 35 yesterday and was up 2 lbs this morning! Whew! Trying to convince myself to continue at that level for the rest of this week...I added beans to my chili...I really have to consider how I will add that extra 5 grams for the rest of this week. I still havent added back any fruit...maybe I will add some berries.

some of your intake is all over the map. did you start OWL through the adding veggies in increments from the Atkins OWL food list? Are you following the add 5g's / week with one item only, for the whole week...so you can tell what might be a trigger, and what isn't? How did you get to beans if you haven't tried adding in berries??? Think it's time to review how to make this transition. No sense in just winging it...and gaining weight...now is there? Let me know if I can help you somehow??? Paula :)

I decided that I would not add berries first before adding in beans and legumes as according to the book I could do that. I added in nuts first though (almonds and some macadamias). Doing my best to keep the carb range at increments of 5 grams every 2 weeks. I have been reading and re-reading New Atkins for a New You to ensure that I am following the acceptable foods list. You are right about my intake varying, The most difficulty I am having is with my weekly travel. That causes me uncertainty as far as what I am actually eating. From Monday through Thursday, dinners are variable as I am not cooking for myself. For now, there is no remedy for that, but I try to keep my breakfasts relatively the same. So, doing the best I can with what I got at this point. My real question is whether I need to stay at around 30 carbs for another week or go ahead and increase to around 35 (adding in berries today or tomorrow since I wont likely have access to beans every day).

Oh, by the way, I do realize that in the long run those two lbs in one day dont mean much. Just kind of wanted to vent about it :D

well, not totally convinced the beans caused your uptake...but trying 5g's of berries for a week shouldn't be an issue. I do know what you mean regarding your variations due to your travel/work schedule. So try to limit climbing the ladder too high, too fast. Do you still test w/ your ketostix? are you still burning ketones?

I have been unable to find the ketostix anywhere. Have just been going by the degree of keto breath! LOL. I should probably try walmart again. I will move up slowly (today I didn't manage to get as high due to dinner). Not sure what caused that jump. I will see how its going when I go back home Thursday. Thanks again!

Ketostix arent a necessity and according to the new book are unreliable. That being said, it's fun to watch the change. They are behind the counter at all drug stores. Here they are around $9.99 (store brand) to $14.99

I find my Ketostix in WalMart near the diabetic testing supplies

You can also ask any local pharmacy to get the ketostix for you, if they don't have them in stock. That's what I did at my local RiteAid.
