GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome, because it is designed to ultimately change brain chemicals to treat brain disorders. It is a 6-Stage diet starting with a cleanse, then rebuilding the bacterial biome in the gut. “The GAPS diet is a strict elimination diet that requires its followers to cut out grains, pasteurized dairy, starchy vegetables and refined carbs. It's promoted as a natural treatment for people with conditions that affect the brain, such as autism.” I’ve heard it is similar to the Paleo diet, but add in lots of fermented foods (bacteria) and remove refined foods. My doctor prescribed it because of a bacterial imbalance in my gut causing chronic constipation.
