I was thinking about how it's rude to tell someone they look fat but it's acceptable to tell another person he/she looks too skinny, so thin, etc.

Although, at certain point I understand them, because I used to see everyone around me too skinny when in reality I was too fat. 🤔

I'd say it. If I'm ever to goal and someone says I'm too thin... I'd definitely tell them they are too fat. 🤷🏻‍♀️ i feel like as a fat person or former fat person, I would earn the right to say it. 😜

Most of the time it's rude, but sometime losing a lot of weight, quickly, can be a sign of serious problem; my Mom suddenly lost weight, turned our she had Stage 4 lung cancer. My siblings and I all wish we had spoken up sooner.

There is such a thing as too thin though.

Keilin, you can always candy coat the insult. "Really, I am too thin, have you looked in the mirror lately." Then smile sweetly and walk away.

E - I need you to teach me the candy coat method. I just usually tell people to F off. Your way seems much more civilized.

I completely agree with this. When I was working out regularly and easily maintaining less than 115 I had many people say I needed to eat more or I was too thin. But never were one of these same people not reasonably overweight. People also seem to always say things like how do you stay so thin? You must have a fast metabolism. Um no.... I have to work for it just like anyone else. I can’t just eat everything I want and do nothing and expect results.

Society often appreciates the appearence of skinny people over fat people. period. It's not a good thing or a bad thing. It's just a thing bc skinny people are just usually seen as prettier. So, when you call someone fat, it is offensive. No one wants to be too fat. Call them thin, and it can go either way. eh it's hard being objective with people. if you're overweight and unhealthy, exercise and eat a little less. if you're underweight and unhealthy, exercise and eat a little more. It doesn't need to be dramatic lol

It’s not science, it’s logic. Take a (reasonably not anorexically) thin person and a bigger (not to say fat to sugar coat reality) person in a standard frame and it’s obvious that technically, their health will be better (heart pressure, blood work etc), buying clothes will be cheaper and easier, etc.

I think it's probably jealousy, too a little bit. And like someone else said... You are overweight so don't have the right frame of reference. Maybe? Idk. Just rambling. 😜

I wish during the time I gained 55 lbs a friend, family member or close coworker would have expressed a concern over the gain and how they saw it impacting me physically and reached out of concern to what was going on on my life.. No one did. Losing 40 lbs having a secretary say to me once but twice how "skinny" I was getting (which I am not), I felt was inappropriate. That I think was out of jealousy since she is overweight herself. no inquiry as to what I was doing just a comment. It is difficult when to know when to say something and how to say it when appropriate. Good post!

dp you are right! When I was overweight I thought everyone had a perfect body. Now I’m like (in my head) “what happened to them?”

But they have not changed, I did

The president of my company has said "you're getting so skinny" the last three times we've met...Definitely meant as complimentary and definitely ridiculous as I'm 200 lbs give or take. People don't always know what to say. If I'm being called skinny now...what will they say at 150 or even 170? I'll probably get a snide comment of "how much are you trying to lose?" And I'm excited for that day. I don't think I'll mind. 😊❤️🤸‍♀️

Probably cause in my mom side I, my siblings and I are the only obese ones

From my obese side of the family I don’t mind the comments.
