Know that metformen is best if you’re working to get your sugar under control. The GI tract hates sugar, and metformin pulls sugar from the blood and dumps it in the GI, that’s what causes the nasty diarrhea. A moderate carb like 30 carbs a meal and 10 carbs a snack (one or two a day) will help you! Good luck!

@Keyten would be a great person to follow hear on FS. She was able to reverse her diabetes by eating a plant-based diet. Check out her journals or message her if you have questions.

Sorry to hear. I was also recently diagnosed as prediabetic and insulin resistant (which is how I ended up on FS). Definitely get inspiration and support from the FS community, but it’s also a good idea to get a referral from your doctor to see a nutritionist.

Soniab, sorry to read that you are a diabetic. My son was diagnosed as a brittle diabetic at the age of 13 and is now 50 and doing very well. The first step to living a successful life as a diabetic is to accept it. The failures are those who are in denial. Denial starts with a D and so does Death. I agree with MsJay and get an appointment with a dietitian. We can support you but professional help is next in line after you acceptance in the fact that you are diabetic.

It will be ok. You can actually reverse it eventually ❤️ my daughter has been on Metformin 500 mg twice a day for 8 years. She is insulin resistant. Watch your carb intake try to go for the healthy grains. Don’t be afraid to eat. Now you have a reason to eat a healthy balanced WOE and still have the occasional treat. I agree follow Keyten.

I was diagnosed with full on Type II in 2011 (A1C of 14, BG over 400!). I also have Hashimoto’s Thyroid disease (auto immune), and PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), the latter of which which pretty much guaranteed I’d end up Diabetic, who knew? I sure didn’t! And if I had? I’d have done a LOT of things differently in my 20’s and 30’s. Please also be REALLY careful about who you listen to in regards to Diabetes. Including your doctor! Physicians get almost zero training in nutrition, and next to nothing in Endocrine systems. There is sooooooooo much misinformation out there (such as, “you can reverse it with a plant based diet” or “just don’t eat carbs”). Neither of those two statements are true, AND can literally kill you. Two books I highly recommend you run to the bookstore (or Amazon) to buy are: “Blood Sugar 101: What They Don’t Tell You About Diabetes” by Jenny Ruhl and “The Book of Better” by Chuck Eichten. Jenny also has a website of the same name <bloodsugar101.com>, and her book “Diet 101; the Truth About Low Carb Diets” is also really helpful, especially at debunking all the BS diet myths out there about managing diabetes. Metformin is where they’ll usually want to start you medication wise. I am still on this med, in addition to Januvia now. One is dirt cheap; the other is off the charts expensive. You will need a Glucosometer, test strips and lancets. TEST OFTEN! At least 3x a day! Your doctor will likely say testing once is enough. IT IS NOT! Get yourself a blank journal, and start keeping a log of your BG readings. Or, if you’re tech savvy, get the One Drop app (iOS and Android). Knowing what your BG and A1C results are over time is really (REALLY) important. You will want to get your A1C tested every 3-4 months. Having the BG readings logged over time will help your doctor and/or nutritionist know where you’re at, and where you need to go. Lastly, I know this is really scary! It may even seem like a death sentence. You will be bombarded with info and fear tactics and all kinds of “helpful” advice about what you “should” do. But! If you take the reins of your own healthcare in your hands and if YOU direct the traffic of your health care plan with your doctor, right out of the gate, you can (and will!) manage to fight this stupid disease quite well for the rest of your life. Oh, and walking is your friend! If your sugars get super high after a meal, a 15-20 minute walk can literally drop that BG reading back down into normal range. Taking BG readings regularly will help you figure out what YOUR normal is! Do not let your doctor tell you what that number is! For me, 90-115 is normal. From where I was at (over 400!), a 120-140 barely causes me to blink anymore. I just take a walk! Hang in there, you’ll find a way to adjust to this news and there is lots of support out there to help you along the way. Please feel free to DM me as well. ((hugs))

Good luck figuring out the best way to control your blood sugar! You'd think that something like that would have a fairly simple solution, what with it being sugar that's problematic.

I was diagnosed last Wednesday with diabetes, in my blood work my A1c was 6.8. They put me on metformin. I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant and after delivery my body just broke. It now can’t process sugar. The best way to manage this is blood glucose readings, you can see what works best for you! Don’t be afraid of carbs! Just stay away from refined carbs. Like sugar and white breads. I’m hoping that with my diet change and added exercise I can reverse it and not have to be on medicine forever but until then, I’m going to take it and do the best I can to be as healthy as I can be. I’ve also noticed for me, when I pair something with higher carbs with some fat my glucose levels don’t go as high. I also highly recommend seeing a dietitian that specializes with diabetes
