Lotus's Journal, 03 May 08

I may be a bit neurotic but...someone help. This vanilla extract thing is STILL bothering me. There are two kinds of imitation vanilla extract, alchohol and non. Non has only 7 calories per tbs, and alcohol has 31. As stupid and petty as it may be I need to know which this is!. I think ethl is an alchohol. The ingredients are, water, propylene glycol, caramel color, 0.15 Sodium benzoate, phosphoric acid, ethly vanillin. Anyone care to interpret? I have googled like crazy and still can't figure it out.
Yes I am nuts. But I count a stalk of celery, I count a stick of gum, and I am going to count the few calories that I add to my drink too(if it is much) The thing that mainly is annoying me, is I was using a LOT of vanilla extract, I don't think ya'll understand. Maybe I was getting high off the alchohol.
Just kidding. It doesn't smell particularly strong or alchoholish. I'm not going to use much until I find out for sure. I am thinking about just getting some real vanilla now, it has more calories, but tastes better. Hell if I have to count it might as well make it worth it.
I always thought extracts were freebies. Guess there's no such thing. Kind of like the shock I has when I found Splenda has calories. False advertising blows.
WHY CAN"T I STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS??
OI. ANYWAY..
scale same again. It likes to level off every time I have a loss it seems! I lost 7.2 pounds for the challenge, a tiny bit more than a pound a week. That one week I gained..I wish that wouldn't have happened, it would probably be 8. Oh well. I am holding my breath to hit my goal so I can reset my goal to 115.
The only reason I wait is that I would like to revel in the glory of reaching it for a minute or two before resetting! :)
Well, have a great day, all, sorry for my CRAZY CALORIE OBSSESSION, but if anyone knows about the extract plese tell me so I can move on with my life, lol.
It's kind of not funny is it. I woke up this morning, and my first zombie-ish though was
"vanilla extract..how many..calories..."
I am not joking.
That is a true story.

Deep breaths, Lotus, deep breaths! You will reach your goal either way. Can you distract yourself with bigger thoughts? I am pretty positive that what you have is imitation. In my cabinet I have Simply Organic Vanilla Extract. It contains only Water, Organic Alcohol, and Organic Vanilla Bean Extractives. I have a funny vanilla story. I used to work in a grocery store and this lady used to come in all the time and buy several boxes of vanilla extract. Often she would come in more than once a day. Sometimes she would be wearing sunglasses. I was so confused. What do you do with all this vanilla? I asked. She told me she washed her vegetables in it. I told my co-workers that and they all laughed at me... "She is drinking it, Cindy, duh!" Oooooohhhhh, that explained a lot. ;) You never would think, but people really do do that!

I am getting over it..but there are two kinds of imitation is what i was saying, one is higher cal. Maybe I should chug it as an experiment and see if I get drunk. Kidding! Funny story, cindy!! Stupid to drink vanilla extract though when alchohol is so cheap! She must have been trying to hide it or something. LOL!!

I think you are right to a bit concerned if you really are drinking a LOT of it. A bottle a week, is more than most, but I'd guess it to be more of a "moderate" amount and probably isn't adding more than a few pieces of gum. I'll bet if you were to check a natural store or web site that you may have more luck with info or a more natural product with less ramifications. ? You're doing great!! You nearly THERE! :)

Oh, I am sorry, Lotus, I didn't read closely enough. I have no idea then. But really, you'd have to drink, like, 150 servings for the difference between the two to make a difference of one pound. and stressing over it won't be good for your metabolism! But if its still bothering you, can you call the manufacturer? yeah... I never did figure out what that lady's angle on the vanilla was, lol. She was a weird one... and her family, too.

In chemistry, an ethyl group is an alkyl functional group derived from ethane, neither of which is an alcohol, though when the ethyl group is added to an alcohol group you get ethanol. The list of ingredients you gave look to be non alcohol. the alcohol vanillas that I have seen don't hide the alcoholic ingredients, they usually say "Mascar. vanilla beans soaked in alcohol" On the internet, try looking the ingredients of nonalcoholic vanillas and see if they match yours. I find the real stuff worth all the counting, and costs. :)

Thanks dwhummeres, that's a big help! It's not much calories then. Yeah, maybe I should concentrate not having brownies and ice cream for dinner instead of worrying about vanilla extract! I spent all my dinner calories on a bowl of ice cream and lowfat brownie again!! So delicious! OH well. ;) I do love Coke Zero too! :)
