Mdonarlz's Journal, 12 May 10

For a while now I have been struggling to lose weight. Trying to blame my slow gain on my hypothyroidism. I am lucky to have a dietition for a cousin and asked what my deal was. After evaluating my foods she tells me I might have a wheat intolerance. So I stopped eating wheat for 2 weeks. Lost 6 pounds. This past week I switched back to wheat and gained a pound back. SO looks like I have an intolerance. Anyway, now that I know that, maybe keeping a slow loss will start coming around for me rather than a slow gain. I will miss my wheat. :-(

I've been a member for a while and just today started reading journals to maybe help me figure out why I'm not loosing anything (actually gaining). I came across your post and just wanted to thank you and ask a question (or two) I have hypoT and I've avoided wheat in the past - thinking I might be gluten intolarant. I recently started the IR diet and have started eating wheat again last week in order to get more fiber. Since then I have gained 3lbs. But since the wheat didn't bother my stomach anylonger I assumed I really didn't have an intolerance. Now I'm reconsidering it. Maybe it's why I gained? What made your cousin think you had a wheat intolerance? And how do you get enough fiber in your diet w/o eating wheat?

My cousin told me a many hypoTs have a wheat intolerance. Which is why she told me to give it a try. I was hardcore wheat tho, I mean everyhting was wheat, my noodles, bread, cereal, anyhting I made, cookies even where wheat flour. Pancakes, waffles, snacks, I am talking everything. So when I stopped, I changed it all except the cereal, simply because I eat the cereal for the extra iron, because I am also very low iron all the time. So I haven't gone too much non wheat so I still get my fiber. This intolerance is such a new thing to me so it will be a learning process from now to get things right. But for now, that's what I am doing. I weigh in tomorrow. Hoping to lose that extra pound I put on. :-)
